Don't Let Your Hiring Practices Turn Into Your Maginot Line
Every business wants to be secure. No business wants to lose money. To offset the current and future threats to security or capital loss, modern businesses large and small spend tens of thousands, even millions, installing video cameras and metal detectors. They hire security guards and order employees to carry identity cards. They monitor activities and wrap barbed wire around the parking lot. From a technological standpoint there is no end to efforts to secure data files and proprietary content. No industry lives without fear of crackers and hackers, vying to steal vital computer codes, bank accounts, and credit card information. In response, myriad companies are producing their versions of data security applications. They develop firewalls, passwords, encryption codes and spyware protection applications. Meanwhile, far too many companies have failed to take the first and most obvious step in protecting their business from theft and abuse. They have failed to order even basic pre-employment background checks on their job candidates. Despite all precautions, they have created a situation where the menace lurks within. And that menace may be (greater than all other threats combined.I recall my conversation many moons ago with the notorious international jewel thief, Albie Baker. At the time I was doing the book tour for "Stolen Sweets," Albie's autobiography. While driving around from one media interview to another he pointed out the fancy mansions in Beverly Hills he had burglarized some twenty years before."It was so easy," he said. "Back then, they would spend all their bucks on securing their front doors. But the back doors and maid's entrances were secured only with a simple lock. I used to open them with a screwdriver."Too many companies are following the same senseless pattern as Albie's victims. They are spending all that money on physical and technical security, and yet they are trying to save a couple of bucks by failing to conduct pre-employment background checks. They are leaving not just the back door open but the front door as well, for workplace violence, embezzlement, data theft, sexual harassment, and drug and alcohol abuse. Some companies are so careless they have hired candidates without knowing if they were felons, perverts or diligent workers. To make this point, CBS News recently ran a special feature where it had one of its people apply for the Santa Clause gig at five different malls in Los Angeles. The catch was that instead of using his real name the CBS employee assumed the identity of an actual convicted felon and sex offender. The man he was impersonating was a convicted pedophile and was registered along with the 63,000 others in California on what is commonly known as "Meagan's List." His nefarious past and questionable present were not what you call a deep secret.Nevertheless, all five companies hired this man to be Santa Claus. As caretakers and de facto protectors of the thousands of kids who come to the malls every Christmas season they provided the lap of a pedophile as the place for your children to sit. Can you think of a better way to ruin the holidays? For your kid? Forever? In defense of their actions, one man claimed he ran the applicant through a free pre-employment background check. The others commenced to shucking and jiving, issuing an assortment of lame excuses.Considering that drug and alcohol abusers cost businesses and estimated $100 Billion annually, you would think every business would take the precaution of mandating pre-employment background checks. Add to this sad statistic that employee theft costs American businesses between $60 and $120 Billion, annually and is the cause of thirty percent of the business failures. It has been estimated that replacing the wrong hire can cost the employer up to 24 times his or her annual salary. I'm sure you can guess if it's the drug and alcohol abusers or the sober and diligent employees who are the cause of most accidents and the most violence in the workplace. The statistics go on, the costs mount up, the risks are heightened.Yet there are still some decision makers who don't see the importance of conducting pre-employment background checks. And if they do conduct pre-employment background screenings, they try to cut corners and cheap it up, rather than obtain a really comprehensive background report. Not only are they doing themselves a disservice they are doing the same to their own employees. The early loss of the French to the Germans in the Second World War has been attributed to the French misconceptions of its "Maginot Line." The Maginot Line was a formidable series of fortifications, bunkers, artillery, considered impregnable to assault. Perhaps it would have been the case has the Maginot Line been pointed in the right direction. But as with Albie Baker's quarry in Beverly Hills, the Maginot Line was constructed to protect the front door. However, the Germans came through the back door and defeated the French military in short order. It could be said, "They opened it with a screwdriver."The simple lesson to all of this, is let history and Albie Baker dictate that you should never overlook the most obvious place that your are vulnerable to theft and disaster. Sure data security, video cameras and security guards may all be necessary, but don't allow your business to be another Maginot Line. Common sense dictates, if you want security then address the area where you are the most vulnerable. Considering shrinkage, the risk of lawsuits and countless liability issues, pre-employment background checks are extremely cost effective.Remember--Check Them Out Before You Hire.Gordon Basichis is the author of the best selling Beautiful Bad Girl, the Vicki Morgan Story, a non-fiction novel that helped define exotic sexuality in the late twentieth century. Reverse War Panning Simulation for the Protection of Our Nation
After murderous International Terrorists attacked the United States; personally like many Americans I was completely angry. It was at this point I decided to do something about it. And immediately put the think tank into full defense mode.I thought that after having traveled around this country and setting up franchises that my knowledge of the situation was one of the best. Here is a brief overview of some of my travels;http://www.carwashguys.com/campaigns.shtmlhttp://www.carwashguys.com/capitols.shtmlYou see our Department of Homeland Security was not formed yet and at the time the FBI and authorities may have known there is going to be more attacks, but they certainly are not thinking it through from an International Murderous Terrorist's perspective. And after 9-11 the blame game and bureaucracy changes did not allow them to stop this stuff. Today things are much better, but then well we did not feel so protected.Of course in the media the authorities said they were doing all this great stuff and tried to reassure the citizens that everything was just safe and wonderful, it was all smoke and mirrors really, it was all BS.I advised the think tank that it would not take more than a few hundred hours with in-depth maps of water lines, oil pipelines, natural gas lines, freeways, rail, harbors, communication stations, tunnels to figure out a hell of a plan. If the International Terrorists had the resources, could they pull it off? Perhaps. We determined that we could do the same thing from their perspective and we came up with all the information to see what areas they would first attempt to exploit; determining our Nation's weaknesses. We found many, but not nearly as many as we thought we would find. You see it takes a few out of the box thinkers, in a think tank setting to figure it out and guard against it and improve the odds of tragedy. We found some areas, which were not safe and completely problematic. Then one by one, we made recommendations, studied the technology we might need and then advised of how to protect the American People. Suffice it to say that the best minds are at work along with the DHS Department of Homeland Security, which is now in full swing and all this in behind the scenes protecting all of us. Consider this in 2006."Lance Winslow" - Online Think Tank forum board. If you have innovative thoughts and unique perspectives, come think with Lance; http://www.WorldThinkTank.net/wttbbs/
Hello From Cuba (12)
Etecsa Telecommunications Building, Downtown Havana, Thursday, April 13, 2005, 3:32 pmI really gotta hurry, I only have about 28 minutes left on my Internet card so I am going to try to be brief here. The last few days have been extremely interesting. I am not a political expert, but in a city like Havana you cant help but be confronted with politics. Everywhere you see billboards with political slogans, monuments of heroes that were significant in Cubas history, pictures of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, and the Cuban Revolution as well as the present economic circumstances are omnipresent topics of conversation.I have read a lot about Cuba and tried to talk to as many people as possible and there are a few things that have crystallized in my mind as general impressions of Cuba. Once again, these are my personal impressions and they are definitely not based on scientific fact, but nevertheless I will share them with you.Cubans are a fiercely proud and independent people and more than anything they insist on preserving their national independence and sovereignty. At various times throughout history Cuba was dominated by the Spanish, the English or the Americans and since the Cuban Revolution in 1959 Cubans have had self-determination for the first time in history. Obviously, Cubans avowed political enemy is the US goverment, but I have heard numerous people say that they have nothing against the American people, their issues are with the US government, and in particular the embargo and the travel restrictions for Cubans living in the US. Apparently, relatives of Cuban families are now only allowed to travel to Cuba once every 3 years, so the policites were tightened significantly by the US government in recent times. The results of the embargo and the economic shortages are visible everywhere, buildings are crumbling, there is not enough construction material, hospitals are lacking in equipment, and personal income is extremely low (eg. between $ 8 and $20 a month...). As a result, everybody is forced to open a little side business. During the last few days I have heard that it is extremely common in Cuba to steal resources from the State since all economic activity including retail is nationalized.People steal cosmetics, hygience products, cement, wood, computers, cigars, everything that is not absolutely nailed down. Then they sell the products privately under the table. It is strangely ironic that in a Communist country, everybody has turned into an entrepreneur... The phrase that I have heard is hay que inventar, you have to invent things - be creative in order to survive. This mentality manifests itself in some very obvious ways: yesterday Pedro and I tried to get into the Partagas Tobacco Factory since I wanted to go on a tour. The security guard told us that an employee had died and that therefore the factory was closed. Then, under his breath, he asked us if we wanted to buy a box of cigars. How amazing: the security guard protecting the tobacco factory is selling (stolen) cigars on the black market. Also, just outside the Capitol building, Havanas most astounding and most well-known architectural jewel, there is a beautiful park with tropical flowers, shadowy trees and benches. And almost all the benches are missing their wooden slats, on the seat, the backrest or both. And these benches are located right outside Cubas most famous building! Today I received the explanation that quality wood is extremely difficult to get and that people simply help themselves.....The number and types of private entrepreneurial schemes is too large to mention. Only a few are legal, for example the paladares (private restaurants in private homes), the casas particulares (bed and breakfasts) as well as various types of private taxis. But apart from this small number of officially permitted private enterprises, virtually everybody in this country has turned into an entrepreneur. Any person that owns a car, and car ownership is extremely restricted here, uses it to give a lift to people, picks up passengers at a street corner and drops them off 20 minutes later in return for 10 Pesos, all money made under the table. All these things are strangely ironic to me, since Cuba officially is a Communist country, where private property and private enterprise is all but forbidden, but in order to survive the entire population has turned into an army of entrepreneurs. On the other hand, Cuba has achieved tremendous accomplishments, for a small, third-world Carribean country. Close to 100% of Cubas population is literate, public education is available to everybody. Black people and women in particular have benefited from the effects of the revoluation. The health care and education system are among the most developed systems in the 3rd world, and Cubas life expectancy and infant mortality rates are among the best of the world. In addition, post-revolutionary Cuba has also dedicated itself to promoting sport and athelticism and today Cuba excels in many different sports (track and field, baseball, basketball, volleyball, fencing and others) on an international level. So all in all, the Cuban Revolution has had some astoundingly positive effects on the country, despite all the hardships that people still experience. However, it seems that there is a little bit of optimism in the air, since Cuba signed trade agreements with Venezuela, various other Latin American countries and China. And of course great hope is placed in Cubas tourism industry. However, on the other hand, you have to keep in mind that Cuba is still a dictatorship, a totalitarian regime and human rights and personal freedoms are restricted here. There is a palpable paranoia here among people in that they are afraid of publicly criticizing the regime. And organizations like the CDR, the Comite de la Defensa de la Revolution, often act as watchdogs and informers on the people. Travel is extremely restricted, or impossible, and there are no official methods of criticizing the government. This short little bit of time has been great in giving me an insight into Cuban culture, politics and economics, and my classes at the university are great since my colleagues also add to a very interesting discussion. We discuss and compare the Scandinavian, Cuban and Canadian health systems, political systems, mass media and economic policies and all this has truly been an eye-opening experience. This entire article including photos is located at http://www.travelandtransitions.com/stories_photos/hello_cuba_12.htm

Breakthrough for the Business Person: How to Overcome Career Disappointment and Create Your World
Disappointment is something we all deal with at different times in our lives. When your vision for the future nowhere to be seen in your present it is easy to be disillusioned. Nevertheless there is a way to create your world and to get your internal reality to manifest outwardly. Be encouraged! Your present reality is not your destiny! Here are 12 Secrets to Overcome Career Disappointment and Create Your World1. See the big pictureHold to your inward vision despite that which you see going on around about you. If you can see it, you can conceive it. Your vision is your ultimate mission. Though your job description may be miniscule and confining, your vision should be magnificent, liberating and invigorating. Remember what you see is not for everybody. Maintain rejoicing in yourself alone, as you journey toward the realization of your dream.2. Don't sweat the small stuffDon't let trivial irritants obscure your vision and thwart your progression toward your future. Sometimes it is the small stuff that can be most aggravating. It's easier to dodge a rock than if someone were to come up and throw sand in your eyes. The smallest of things sometimes can be the most hindering. Avoid unnecessary conversations and complaining sessions among your coworkers. Be productive and avoid conversations that are corrosive. Focus on the future and stay on track in your journey to get there. Tune out to the small stuff that comes to distract you from your dream, detour you en route to your future and demobilize you by entangling you in pointless conversations.3. Go where you are celebrated not merely toleratedThe majority of people will not acknowledge or see your gifts, talents and unique abilities. Don't be surprised. Most people are selflessly fixated and still trying to discover their own uniqueness. Those who are self-aware are often fully engaged in realizing their own dreams. Don't be alarmed if they don't give you the time of day. Nevertheless serendipity will shine on you and cause divine relationships and appointments to come your way. As you cross paths and intersect with like minded people who celebrate your gifts take heed to what they say, express and see pertaining to your destiny.Remember oranges don't grow in Alaska. If you want to grow oranges, try Florida or California. Likewise must you be planted in an environment and climate conducive to your personal growth and enrichment. Only you will know what that is based on the treasures within you are endeavoring to bring forth. Go where you are celebrated not merely tolerated.4. Guard your tongue and flourish where you are plantedWherever you are guard your tongue against character assassination. Though you may see some things, that does not mean you need to say anything. Remember we all are continually growing and maturing. Allow people time for personal growth and transformation. Change can come to any and all of us. People make changes in an atmosphere of unconditional love and acceptance. Better is it to make friends than enemies.Flourish where you are planted by finding your place and happily contributing where you are. Once people feel how much you care, they will take interest in how much you know. Earn the right to be heard by your continual contribution and by showing yourself a team player. Remember trees don't fight and struggle to bear fruit. They just remain planted and naturally flourish.5. See problems as opportunitiesContrary to popular belief, a problem is an opportunity. You wouldn't think so by the way people murmur and complain. Consider problems as opportunities for you to arise and shine. Rise above the mediocrity and manifest your creativity. Doctors get paid for solving medical problems; lawyers solve legal problems; and mechanics solve car problems.Problems therefore are a pathway to your next promotion. While others meander in the mud of mediocrity and allow problems to bury them, let problems carry you to your future as you show yourself a problem-solver and someone who can be counted on to provide visionary leadership.6. Be a peacemaker and an encouragerWorkplace strife fills and floods the lives of many. Have no part in such negative counterproductive energy. Be a peacemaker and bridge builder. By doing so you will make friends, feel better and find new ways to overcome organizational obstacles. There are far too many tearing each other down and far too few building one another up. Avoid the trap of discouragement by being a continual source of encouragement to yourself and those around about you. Infuse people with energy through encouragement and make yourself an indispensable source of motivation.7. Go the extra mileDon't be like everybody else. Break the mold. Lift up your head and throw your shoulders back. Stand tall and separate yourself from the crowd. Arrive at work early and leave late. Pull out of the hustle and bustle. Stop the rat race.Manage your emotions and martial your energies. In so doing your productivity, creativity and resourcefulness will increase. By going the extra mile and exceeding your job description you will show yourself to be a true asset to the company and somebody who can be counted upon.Go the extra mile! There are few who do so. When you go the extra mile you quickly separate and identify yourself from the crowd. There is a lot of room at the top for you to spread your wings and fly higher.8. Replace anxiety with creativityDon't be overly anxious. Anxiety drains you of your energy and immobilizes your resourcefulness. Get a grip on yourself and patiently possess your soul.Be more childlike and playful. See things differently. Get various viewpoints from others outside of your scope of employment. Fully consider all of your options. Shift the variables and consider rotating criteria. Playfully and skillfully evaluate the best alternatives available until you determine the most appropriate course of action.9. Be a lifelong learnerThere are two types of growth: inward and outward. Most look for outward growth, profitability and expansion. Yet inward growth is equally if not more important. For without inner growth outward growth never occurs, neither can it be sustained.Commit to be a lifelong learner. Continually listen, learn and explore new bodies of knowledge. One thing is certain. You don't know it all. It's amazing how much you can learn after you know it all.The greatest minds and highest achievers are committed to continual personal growth and inward expansion. They challenge themselves intellectually and endeavor to have new experiences personally that will build them inwardly.10. Serve selflesslyEverybody wants to lead but few want to serve. You can't always be the top dog. Very often the top dog is the guy who chose to humble himself a long time ago and serve everybody.People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. When you serve people you show them you care and that you recognize they are important. When you make people feel important, they pour gratitude back into you. Those you honor will assuredly honor you.Serve selflessly and opportunities will be many, successes sweeter and people pleasant.11. Remember the future is in you - not the jobContrary to popular belief, the future is not in the job. The future is in you. With or without the job you can excel and come into your dreams. Your inner world once acknowledged and embraced can be made to manifest in any place. So should your current employer and coworkers be clueless, you can still come into your destiny single handedly. When you are firm and solid in your identity, you can bring about your destiny. Never underestimate your personal power to experience dream fulfillment when you put feet to your faith. Sometimes the first steps into to your future are those out the door of your limiting beliefs that have held you a captive.12. Set your intent and follow your instinctsYou don't always have to know how it is going to happen. Just set your intent as to that which you want to happen. Thereafter be led by your gut and instincts.Intuitively within you know what to do. Now stop questioning yourself and being double minded about it. Trust your internal knowings and move on them! As you do you will continually create your world and wholeheartedly enjoy the journey!Paul Davis is author of Breakthrough for a Broken Heart a book telling us "How to overcome disappointments and blossom into your dreams!" Transportation to and from the LAX airport and its vicinity is simple with shuttle buses, taxis, rental cars, the airport and public buses and even light rail.9. While many airports today are located on the outskirts of town LAX is located on 3,425 acres right in the heart of Los Angeles.10. How many airports do you know that have their own song? LAX airport has a song that was written by Leann Scott and performed by David Frizzel in 1970 called LA International Airport. Then, in 1971 Susan Raye, a famous country singer redid the song and it shot to number 9 on the country charts and 54 on the pop chart. Just recently, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the LAX airport, it was sung again by Susan Raye and then it was given new lyrics by Leann Scott and sung again by Shirley Myers.11. The Los Angeles International Airport also supports the public arts programs of the community. Right at the entrance of the airport are 100 foot high pylons and 32 foot high letters that spell out LAX. This is the work of the artist Paul Tzanetopoulos. There is also a program at LAX airport which allows high school students from the area to display their works in the airport in a revolving display. The students not only gain some notoriety and recognition, but they also can get university credit for participating.12. You can also find all of the typical airport services at LAX. You will find bookshops and restaurants, lost and found, shoe shine stations, baggage storage, banking machines, and first aid stations.Your trip to (or through) Los Angeles International airport can be enjoyable and relaxing if you know what is available to you. The airport is working to become more easily accessible and passenger friendly. To get you in the mood for your trip, take a listen to the theme song. You can find it online.By Margarette Tustle. Come To London - A Great Place To Visit!
I love London, it is my kind of town. Now I know that to most people this would sound as if I am plagiarising some advertising copy for either New York or Chicago but in this case I truly mean it.I have lived AND worked in London for well over 30 years and I have seen everything come and go, good times and bad times. From the bad old days and the darkest hours of the terrorist bombing campaigns of the Provisional IRA in the 70's and 80's to the good times when the announcement was made that London had been awarded the 2012 Olympics and the Queens Jubilee. London has seen it all and treats both with the same respect.I remember travelling through London to return home to Northern Ireland where I now live on the day the news broke that Princess Diana had tragically been killed in a car accident in Paris and the sense of grief and shock were overwhelming as total strangers just blindly made their way to Kensington Palace to lay flowers at the peoples memorial. Then at the other end of the spectrum you have London the day of the "Live 8" Festival in Hyde Park where the city centre was brought to a standstill with blaring rock music belting out across the entire City Centre. There is so much history in London, real live, vibrant living history in London that sometimes when you live there it just passes you by and you take everything for granted.Take the changing of the guard for instance. This happens everyday at Betty and Phil's place at the end of the mall. OK I should be slightly less flippant. I am of course referring to Buckingham Palace, home of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh found at the end of the Mall. Perhaps the most notable of the Changing of the Guards in recent years was held shortly after the awful events of 911 when instead of playing God Save the Queen the band of the Guards performed what turned out to be quite an emotional performance (certainly for those visiting American tourists in the audience) of the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States of America.Perhaps the significance of this passed most of the on looking tourist by but it was a first in living memory that any other national anthem other than the United Kingdoms own God Save the Queen had been performed at the Changing of the Guards ceremony.Perhaps it is little incidences like these that sum up exactly what a rich cornucopia of the historic and modern, the city of London actually is. Unlike other major international capital cities, London may lack perhaps the historic grandeur of the Parthenon in Athens or the Coliseum in Rome but through out London you will find examples of perhaps a more modern architecture (though no less splendid and impressive) such as the mother of all parliaments, the Houses of Parliament in Westminster or the serenity of St Paul's Cathedral a survivor of many centuries and in many ways every bit as impressive now as in the days of its design under the architect Sir Christopher Wren.If nothing else the building of St Paul's Cathedral is a testament to survival itself having both survived the Great Fire of London in the 16th Century and then four hundred years later the Blitz in World War II.Perhaps this encompasses the overall appeal of London, the historic blend of the old and the new.Come and visit London, it won't disappoint.
Immigration
Before civilization would know the world, there was no slavery, there was barely any property, and the most destructive form of war was a simple, aggressive feud. Before organized society was born on this planet, life was simple, there was no authority, no authority to abuse, and the land was the common property of all living creatures. Once men organized themselves into hierarchies, giving certain occupations, giving certain authorities, requiring obedience, punishing dissent, then the flame of cruelty would begin to burn in the hearts of men, as it would end in scorching the lives of the innocent. Before mankind decided to turn family into society, to turn villages into cities, to turn government into empire, all of the world was the property of all men and all creatures. When it came to movement, there was no restrictions, no embargos. The imaginary lines we call borders today would only be able to exist in the nightmare of primitive man. There was no obstruction, no limitations. When a person decided to travel south to the warmth, or north to the temperate, or west to the ocean, or east to the forest, there were no impositions. There were no walls. These men and women of the primitive world never had to fear for customs checks, never had to worry about search and seizures. There was no authority, there was no fear. The world was owned by every man, and this was the greatest comfort to every individual. As society grew and civilization took root in the history of mankind, borders would be arranged by both law and custom. Individuals would be prohibited from travelling to certain spots. In some cases, it was the land the individual left that would hold them back. In others, it was the land the individual was entering that put up walls. For a law to designate one region from another was not enough. Fences would be erected, and in place of these fences, soon walls would rise, and watch towers would be created, with the aid of soldiers patrolling and scowering. All of this would be created by the authorities of the world, enforced by the greatest armies and the most threatening warriors. It almost seemed as though people would be boxed in, forced to stand in area of land and refused to go anywhere. When we listen to our great demagogues and rabblerousers, our most thoughtful lecturers and speakers, we discover always a love of liberty. There is always a praise of freedom: that a man can do what he wants, what he desires, without obstruction from an outter source, so long as he harms no other person. It has been this ethic, this creed, that has been woven in the fabric of every revolution aiming to overturn an injustice. Without this love of liberty, society would be a dreary and thoughtless musing. With this love of liberty, there is no doubt that we want to be able to walk where we may, or to travel to whatever lands that capture our heart's desire. The fact of the prehistory man, that all of the world is the common property of mankind, this is the ethic that we wish to uphold. When we find ourselves surrounded with borders, threatened with punishment if we should violate one of these borders, we feel that liberty is needed, that the people must be allowed to have freedom. When we read the history of the Soviet Union, we are appalled. We find that people were not allowed to emigrate. Similarly, when we read the history of the United States, we are also appalled. We find that people were not allowed to immigrate. It almost seems as though a gross, unjust restriction is necessary to any government. Why should people be held, chained, shackled, by their governments? It will only create a state of oppressed versus oppressor. Why would a man, or a woman, ever desire to move about? Above all things, there is the desire to test the limits of freedom. We have read poetry by great individuals, who talked about the struggle they championed for their rights. We have heard music, with lyrics that discussed hardship and unity. We have solemnly reread those poems in our head, quietly hummed the tune of those songs, and have always held those authors, those poets, those musicians, those creators and cultivators in adoration. We wanted to test this freedom! I want to be able to climb any mountain, as high as I can. I want to be dance in praries, sing songs in caves, sleep on the beach, write poetry on a grassy hill! These people, truly the best citizens of the world, who have desired to travel to test the limits of freedom -- what do you think would happen if they came to a "No Trespassing!" sing? What would do you think would have happened if they came to fence with barbed wire? Or, what if they came to a towering wall, armed with violent guards and soldiers, who have been taught all their life that you are a part of the criminal element? The only humane and logical answer is this: you would think that a great breach of justice had been committed. We are not discussing here the right to read what you want, or the right to think as you may, or the right to say what is troubling your mind. This is not a matter of censorship of opinions. It is not a matter of gun control, or abortion, or leftist versus rightist ideology in economics. No. This is a simple matter of freedom. Among these great freedoms, it is the freedom to walk and go anywhere that you please, and to do so with that admirable thought in your heart, that this world belongs to you as much as it does to any other person. To go forth, to that magical land that pulls your heart, with the ideal that everything you see is the common property of mankind and the world's animals. I must confess... I can honestly think of no other action that is more indicative of freedom than this.Among the desire to test the liberty of will, there are so many other reasons. One might be attracted to the ideal of travelling either by economic opportunity, family and friends living at a distance, or in hopes to escape political or religious persecution. If you were to meet a man of another country desiring to enter yours, for the sake of living a life with his family with a higher quality of life, would you honestly tell him no? If he had been living in a nation where to be a child meant to be homeless, where the crime rate and the unemployment rate were enormous, where the constant cry for the hunger pains echoed through the ghettos, would you say to him, that you cannot let him into this country, and then plead with us that you had defended justice? Perhaps he speaks another language, perhaps his skin tone is lighter or darker, perhaps he worships a different god. As a tolerant people, we would reject all of these things as elements that could make us regard this man differently. He is a human being, with passions, and desires, and hopes, and emotions, like any of us. It would be for the sake of justice, not any emotionalism, that we were to let him into our nation. If our own economic policy was effective, then it must be accepted that this man would create his own wealth, and add to the riches of everyone else.Think of what mankind has done in order to keep these borders alive. There are politicians who exist right now that are bent on making sure these borders are recognized. They want to see a certain and unflinching duty in the guards who patrol these borders. They want these soldiers to believe that poverty was caused by something besides borders and Capitalism. Asside from the soldiers, they want to see every person in another country look to these borders and feel fear, sense pain... Our politicians would have it so that our nation was completely locked up from the rest of the world if their will was unchecked power. As children are starving to death in foreign nations, as men and women are still burned at the stake for religious persecution, as disease infects and destroys these already crumbling bodies of children, as the vices of mankind spread at a rate equal to war, the first words of the politician will be, "Innocent or guilty, just or unjust, those people cannot come in to our country." Whether looking for the long lost touch of their family, their lovers, their friends, or whether seeking to escape emminent persecution for ideals, there are some cases where a person will accept the status of "refugee" when it means escaping. We look to the freedom to explore ideas, thoughts, and philosophies as perhaps one of the greatest of all freedoms. It is the liberty that stands as the greatest guardian against tyranny. To deny it would be to advance arguments on behalf of every unjust government. And yet, while this right is upheld by Civil Rights groups and active citizen meetings, the freedom to explore the world is hindered. We find borders, lined with armed towers and walls, circulating guards; and the man who is trying to escape the persecution of his own land comes only to find this. As I said earlier, the world was once the common property of mankind. In that era, one that almost reached complete bliss, there was never a war spawned from property conflicts, never an argument based on borders or imaginary lines. Everything belonged to everyone, and as this idea flowed through the minds of these early tribesmen, they would never think for a moment that their ancestors would forget. They did not have the vision to imagine great towers and great walls; they never saw their kin murdering each other, the victimizer motivated by a paycheck and threats from superiors, the victim motivated at an honest chance of life. The early tribesmen never saw this, their shamen conjuring up unreliable spirits and mystical beings could not predict anything like this.It was called a crime by the United States government when the Soviets put up the Berlin Wall and separated families and friends. Many of them died trying to reach their children, their lovers, their brethren. They were gunned down by the soldiers of a Totalitarian regime. If it is true that the Soviet government committed a crime in separating an entire city, then we must all agree that the United States government is equally guilty of committing a crime. Nay, we are more guilty! The Soviets divided a city, we divide a continent! Whatever the amount of East Berliners that have been shot down by their own soldiers, I imagine that American soldiers are guilty for having shot down ten times as many! It is a crime, and these walls, these barriers, these borders all must come down...www.punkerslut.comFor Life,Punkerslut (or Andy Carloff) has been writing essays and poetry on social issues which have caught his attention for several years. TSA Missteps at Our Airports
The TSA seems to have completely missed the ball at our airports. This is not to say that the Federal Government is completely and utterly incompetent, for that is a whole other debate possibly spanning a thousand agencies? It is also not an immediate call for privatization, as we have already seen the abuses in private police forces and prisons. Local Police Forces have consistently violated our right to free travel under the auspice of homeland security. Some conspiracy theorists claim the clauses in the Patriot Act II are merely a foreshadowing of events to come. These conspiracy theorists go as far as to say that current or near future leadership will use the next large terrorist act to declare Marshall Law and remove the remainder of our rights after they themselves cause the act. Of course such scenarios are more science fiction fantasy than any actual current trend, which are above and beyond the stories of Orson Wells. Yet as we stroll thru our nations airports waiting to board our aircraft one could wonder by the treatment a world where such activities were the norm everywhere you went.Critics of the thinkers in leadership in Homeland Security say that at first sight it looks like a well-controlled security force to protect us from terrorism, however it does not solve the real issues. These critics sight for instance in the 911 event, the well planned attack the hijackers had studied the system and flown those same airlines, destinations, aircraft and been thru those same terminals testing and observing the system many times. Over and over again as if in the movie "Ground Hog Day." Today's security at our airports cannot prevent that type of attack. Because any team wishing to exploit the system could easily do so, by simply watching for holes and understanding the security systems monitoring their actions. The more they go thru the various terminals targeted to be used they would become routine and comfortable, even relaxed to the point that their body language, displacement and demeanor would be virtually undetectable. It would be a bogus notion to believe that all this security is going to prevent another type of attack. It is a complete falsehood to put faith in the current system, which has been put in place. When you fly do you feel safer with all the security or do you feel intimidated and nervous that there must be a real threat or risk for this much control? Hmmm?At best the new airport security systems are making some feel safer. However the system hastily put in place originally after the 911 event did nothing but destroy the airline and travel industry. Now that airline travel is back up to the same numbers as pre-911, the security is impeding citizens in their right to travel. The airport security harasses, hassles and belittles customers and travelers. While allowing thousands of trips per day of Muslim taxicab, shuttle and bus drivers to enter the airport terminals, many of these folks are resentful and hateful of Christians and America in general. They come from countries such as Syria, Iran, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, Pakistan. Many of them, and yes, I have witnessed this on many occasions, sit in coffee shops and complain about America while badmouthing our 90% Christian society, labeling us as hypocrites. One I listened too, complained about Christians coming into Las Vegas area and then asking to be driven to a local strip club in his taxicab. He said they were hypocrites, yet would not take responsibility for getting paid and making a living driving them there, further stating they tip good. As hundreds of taxicab drivers line up in the staging areas prior to go into the terminals, often near the departure ends of the runways, shouldn't we be concerned? In doing this they are able to study the vantage points and places where shoulder launched surface to air missiles could be launched. They also have complete knowledge of airport procedures and talk with airport security and behind fence personal. They eat at the same Denny's Restaurants as mechanics, baggage handlers, refuelers, ground personal and food vendors. It takes a lot to run an airport and airports must hire as many able bodied people as they can to complete these tasks. Unfortunately any future attack will be carried out and assisted by those on the inside.I know former Wal-Mart Security guards who now work at the TSA. At our airports we harass elderly in wheelchairs. I remember one lady who had a Jewish star around her neck and was in a wheel chair being completely searched? Gee Whiz, isn't that who we are suppose to be watching over? Do you believe that the PC'ness of all this is a little bit hypocritical seeing as we are now watching our freedoms circumvented and fed a hook, line and sinker story of Fear in the form mass media hysteria, intimidating laws and freedom reductions? Hmmm?Every time we jump to conclusion without thinking of the ramifications we assist the International Terrorist's by destroying our freedoms or another industry costing us our hard fought liberty and hundreds of thousands of jobs. A positive job report now, makes little difference considering the hardships we caused American Families, our team, in the last many years. That damage has already been done. Airlines are back up to speed and the travel industry is now recovered, but the negative travel industry sector rotation was caused by our team, not some wannabe cave dweller residing underground in Afghanistan; that is just silly, we need to wake up. I am hearing on the street that there are actually people who believe that Bin Laden Jr. is working for us right now, actually on the payroll, keeping the fear factor going? Obviously such conspiracy theorist see some sort of trend here even if that notion is probably about the most far fetched thing one could imagine. Never the less those who watch freedom closely are not buying into any of this reasoning for curtailing of personal constitutional rights. In doing so they are constantly citing the quote: "He who is willing to give up Liberty for temporary Security, deserves neither security nor liberty."Even though many of these conspiracy theorists cannot even name the historical author of that quote, they are quick to point out the fact. Have you thought about that quote recently or read it somewhere? Perhaps watched it said on TV or read it in the Washington Post, NY Times or some academia report lately? We have set up massive security systems at our airports, but are we really any safer than before 911. The answer is probably a little, some say a lot, but all would agree we are hardly protected from another International Attack. In our country we have the right to travel, which is guaranteed in the Constitution. If we are not going to respect that set of principles and that great plan, why don't we just rip it up now? In essence we have allowed ourselves to supercede our own Constitution based on fear from International Terrorists who live in caves and continue to willingly give up more of our rights? Hmmm? You could have all the security you want but a team which plans well in advance with no information leak will have already infiltrated your airport workforce and/or security and thus your safety net to protect travelers is to no avail. We know no greater power in our current realm than an ideal, when that ideal is bound by a religious ideal even more so. Our foes in this case have that advantage and they are using it quite well.So why all the airport security, is it to prevent an attack or is it really for the government security forces who are losing face, so they keep control and attempt to show they are doing something? Well, are they? And before you answer that; the 9-11 report showed a me that what is going on now is a Public Relations campaign, albeit a bad one. Anytime you disrespect good Americans and use some BS excuse we are doing this for your safety, they will see thru it. Having been to every city in this nation over 10,000 people and had conversations with 1,000's of Americans, I can tell you, we are not fooling anyone, people and some might debate this just are not as stupid as you think. From the time you enter an airport facility you are confronted with rude, obnoxious and power trip law enforcement; 'professionals' who are told and actually believe that they are protecting us from terrorists. Actually without realizing it or not and giving them the benefit of the 'no higher than 104 IQ', they more resemble those International Terrorists who attacked us than the nearly one million passengers who travel each day at our largest international airports. Where as some may say they are impressed with the security and that there have been no attacks on our country thanks to security, I would say; "What about all those millions of Americans who lost their jobs after 9-11 due to our political correctness in tightening up perceived risks in our homeland and destroying the flows of our civilization?" Yes, indeed, what about those innocent people with 2.2 kids, white picket fence perusing their American Dreams? Can you deny this statement?Has the Airport Security efforts of the TSA really prevented any International Terrorist attacks? Richard Reed the shoe bomber was stopped by citizens, he boarded the aircraft without scrutiny of authorities. For all we know there are security authorities who are doubling as members of sleeper cells. As a matter of fact as you study the history of Spies and infiltrators this is not only a tactic, it is a recommendation. So then, we do have security personal in our TSA who are really international terrorists, with perfect records just like the 18 hijackers of 9-11 with not even a traffic ticket amongst them. Think about it.Are we actually preventing the next attack by airliner or preparing our populations to live like prisoners with the illusion that they are somehow free? Is this the best America can do? Are you satisfied with what you see? Do you feel safe? Do you care? Are you finding yourself having conspiracy theory thoughts? Are you feeling more stressed these days due to the mass media hysteria? Are you willing to stand up and talk about this or are you afraid to rock the boat? Do you rely on your government to save you from the International Terrorist Threat? Do you believe a threat really exists at all? Here is one for you conspiracy theorists out there, are you finding no one is listening anymore to your critical warnings? Are you feeding into the mass media hysteria on the TV and actually causing more chaos and controversy to an already problematic situation? Do you conspiracy theorists wonder why no one is listening to you and why you are being targeted as anti-establishment?"Lance Winslow" - Online Think Tank forum board. A Short Guide To Britain's Most Exclusive Tradition
Gigantic, vivacious and truly multicultural, London is one of the world's great cities, with a plethora of things to offer visitors. Tourists come for London's history or London's royal pageantry but they return for all the charms of the modern London, not least the extraordinary breadth of London's cultural life, with world-class art galleries and theatres, buzzing nightlife, film, music, culinary and fashion scenes. And if you are looking for royal pageant event, make sure you choose a London hotel in time for the Trooping of the Color. A tradition that fills up the streets of London One of the events that are exclusively British and offer a full street spectacle for both Londoners and tourists is the annual Trooping the Color parade, organized in early June, marks the Queen's official birthday. The event consists of a military parade and march-past by Household Troops on Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall. The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, rides in a carriage during the parade and takes the salutes from a dais on Horseguards Parade. The tradition of having an official birthday for the Sovereign began for practical reasons. Since 1748, the Sovereign's "official" birthday has been marked by this formal military ceremony, normally held on the second Saturday in June. The Queen was actually born on April 21, but it has long been customary to celebrate the Sovereign's birthday on a day during the summer, when better weather is more likely. Monarchs who had their birthdays in the winter months often encountered problems due to cold, wet weather spoiling parades and other outdoor celebrations. The Queen took part in her first Trooping the Color parade as Princess Elizabeth in 1947. It was the first birthday parade to be held after World War II and she wore her uniform as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. The ceremony started in the 18th century, and comes from the ancient military custom of parading a regiment's flag in front of the troops so that they were familiar with the color that they were fighting under during the confusion of battle. Colors are the names given to the flags of the different parts of the army, also known as regiments. The Colors of the flag has the king or queen's (sovereign's) colors with the soldiers' colors. It also has the title, crest and motto of the regiment with the names of battle honors. Over 1400 officers and men are on parade, together with two hundred horses; over four hundred musicians from ten bands and corps of drums march and play as one. Some 113 words of command are given by the Officer in Command of the Parade. The parade route extends from Buckingham Palace along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and back again. Precisely as the clock on the Horse Guards Building strikes eleven, the Royal Procession arrives and The Queen takes the Royal Salute. The parade begins with the Inspection, The Queen driving slowly down the ranks of all eight Guards and then past the Household Cavalry. After the event, the Royal Family gathers on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch an aircraft demonstration. Affordable lodgings for London's exclusive event If you are willing to observe this unique tradition in Europe, you should know that London hotels are basically overbooked during this time of the year, so the best solution is to book well in advance and, even more, use online booking as a reliable way of finding accommodation. If you are traveling on budget, there are plenty of cheap hotel rooms to find. For an ideal family vacation package or even for cheap corporate travel, you can choose London Shelton Hotel, an oasis of tranquility and elegance in the very heart of London, just a few minutes away from the parade place. Another affordable solution is Windsor House Hotel, which basically has all you need for a comfortable, friendly and inexpensive stay in London. The hotel, which offers all the modern amenities you might need is situated in the heart of London, 10 minute walk to Kensington Palace. Another option would be Exhibition Court Hotel, welcoming you in one of the most affordable and comfortable places in the UK capital. A taste of London's luxury accommodations If you are a luxury corporate traveler, or just coming to town and looking for luxury, go to Somerset Queen's Gate Gardens, a complex of cozy, elegant rooms built in 1850 and offering all the modern facilities. You might also choose Britannia International Hotel, a superior first-class hotel. Visitors will be charmed with its panoramic view of the River Thames and London skyline. The hotel offers well-appointed guest rooms and suites and an impeccable health club. No matter where you choose to stay, keep in mind what you are here for, and make sure you make it in time to watch the parade, as it is one of the most exceptional British events throughout the year.
Maritime Security & Counterterrorism Training Videos Break All Sales Records
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL July 23, 2004 " A series of U.S.-produced maritime security and counterterrorism training videos have proven to be the fastest selling maritime training programs in history, according to Martin Glenday, President of Moxie Media. The training series is the first comprehensive ISPS Code and MTSA-compliant maritime security training program designed specifically for seaports and shipping companies to meet both US and international regulatory requirements. After only 90 days from their introduction to the market, there have been over half a million dollars in orders. The Maritime Security Compliance Video Training Series has been purchased by over a dozen foreign governments, including China, Barbados, Grenada, Montserrat, Turkey, St. Kitts & Nevis, and the United States. Other purchasers include the US Coast Guard, the Port of Los Angeles, Maersk Shipping, the US Senate, Dow Chemical, Tropical Shipping, Shell Oil, the National Park Service, TECO Barge Line, Maine State Ferry Service, Hess Oil, the University of California, V. Ships, Wackenhut Corporation, the University of Hawaii Marine Center, Domino Sugar, Crowley Maritime, GlobalSantaFe, Dynegy, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, and the University of Washington. Moxie Media co-developed the 11 video (or DVD) training program with SeaSecure LLC, a global leader in maritime security and counter-terrorism consulting. As a result of the terror attacks of 9/11, the United Nations and the United States established requirements that port and ship personnel all receive specific maritime security training, said Kim E. Petersen, President of SeaSecure, in a press conference. The extraordinary cost of sending such staff to distant learning centers, including academy fees, airfare, hotels, and time away from work, has been crippling. After receiving extensive input from government and maritime agencies, SeaSecure and Moxie Media created a training program that is easy to use, reasonably priced, and compliant with all US and international regulatory specifications. The SeaSecure & Moxie Media Maritime Security Compliance Video Series has become the standard for the industry and is in use by governments, universities, port authorities, and shipping companies around the world. Ship and seaport security training is now required due to the passage of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, and the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. The ISPS Code was adopted by the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) to address maritime security at all international ports and the security of ships engaged in international commerce. The US adopted the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 to codify the requirements of the ISPS Code. Both the ISPS Code and the MTSA have set strict training standards for port and ship operators.Martin Glenday, president of Moxie Media, stated that, With the passage of the July 1, 2004 compliance deadline, the US Coast Guard and foreign authorities are increasing their vigilance to ensure that all required training has been performed by ship owners and port facilities. There is no quicker way to achieve an in-house capability for training compliance and certification than through this video training series. Using the unparalleled international maritime security experience and expertise of SeaSecure, we have developed this series of programs to meet and exceed the mandatory training requirements of the ISPS Code and MTSA. The importance of these videos cannot be overstated. Ports face losing their Statement of Compliance, thereby jeopardizing future visits by ships. And without proper training of their personnel, both ships and ports face increased liability in the event of a security incident. Moxie Media is one of the United States' largest producers and distributors of training and safety programs. For the first time ever, ship, terminal, and port facility operators have the means to train an unlimited number of employees at a fraction of the cost associated with seminar and academy based programs " saving travel costs, tuition costs, and hotel and meals. More importantly, this program will significantly reduce lost time from work and increase productivity. Ports and ships will have the ability to provide ongoing and refresher training for new and returning employees at any time and at no additional charge. Also available for every training program is a comprehensive Facilitators Guide, complete with test questions and answer key. The guide provides the course facilitator with the tools necessary to efficiently and effectively instruct, test, and score students on their comprehension of the maritime security curriculum. Furthermore, Moxie Media and SeaSecure can also provide third party certification of student test results. The cost for the entire series is $2,750, with individual programs available for purchase from $295 to $450 each. Success is always a relative term; But it is R-E-A-L for these Naval Sea Cadets (One of a series)
July 15, 2004 -- By Wayne SpivakNational Press CorpsUnited States Coast Guard AuxiliarySuccess, like life, has its up's and down's. Sometimes what we believe to be a down time, isn't as bad as we think it is, because in our own perspective, our reality changes. But in anyone's reality, the young men and women Cadets of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) are experiencing success. This success is then transformed into future successes as they age, and leave the program for college, career, family and ultimately citizens of this great land. The Naval Sea Cadets Corps (NSCC) is a congressionally chartered program, sponsored by the United States Navy League in conjunction with and the full support of both the Navy and the Coast Guard. Similar in some respects to the Boy Scouts and their nautical offshoot, the Sea Scouts, The Naval Sea Cadets is run by trained and background checked cadre of volunteer adult leaders. There is a small core of paid professionals (mostly retired military) that help administer this national program. As with the Boy Scouts, there are also international Sea Cadets in many other countries. Why are the Cadets, successful? It is the direct result of the commitment and compassion of the numerous adult leaders who instill core values in these youngsters. Cadet's membership starts at age 13' and runs thru 17. The Navy League has a program for younger children, called the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) for 11 to 13 year olds. The NLCC is not congressionally chartered. In fact, the term success could also apply to the cadre of volunteer adult members. "When I got here I couldn't get the dingy off the dock, and now I drive a cutter anywhere in the world" " a former NSCC Cadet, now in the USCG.Why success? Many of the Cadets who move through the program improve in school, and stay out of trouble. They either enter the workforce or college, and for many the military, better prepared to meet the challenges of adulthood, because they are more focused. They have been taught that life has responsibilities, as well as fun, and both need to be placed in the proper perspective, and enjoyed to the fullest.Excelling at an early ageMany times we hear about a child who is excelling, in school or sports or the arts. Usually the source of this information is a proud and boastful parent. These parents have a right to be, and should be proud of their children. But there are other parents who don't talk about their children success at school or sports or the arts. They can talk about these subjects, but their children are excelling in a sphere that brings a new dimension to these other successes. Their children are excelling in real world situations. Real world situations where their children need to develop and project a higher maturity level, quick thinking, and discipline. These traits are needed to both succeed safely. Safety is a key element, both for themselves, as well as others' on their real world team. The Real World in Freeport, TexasAlexander Marquardt, of Freeport Texas is only 14 year old. However this young man has worked with, and gained the admiration of the crew and commander of a United States Coast Guard Cutter. So much admiration, that the officer-in-charge of the Coast Guard Cutter Manta has given this young man an open invitation to return, year after year. But I've moved to fast. Who is young Mr. Marquardt, and why is he on a Coast Guard Cutter? Alexander is a member of the Naval Sea Cadets. As part of the NSCC program, Cadets are given the opportunity to take advanced training, or serve on or aboard Navy and Coast Guard assets. An asset can be a ship (or cutter), patrol boat, or an active military/training base. Cadets travel to and from these units at their own expense. All other training costs are borne by the program.Travel sometimes is expensive, since Cadets have a wide array of choices, which may be wherever the Navy or Coast Guard is in the world. Cadets are also responsible for purchasing their normal complement of uniforms, and personnel gear. Training grants are sometimes available, based on need and local and national funds available. In the summer of 2002, Mr. Marquardt was given the opportunity to select where he wanted to spend his week of advanced training. He elected to serve his week with the Coast Guard. After applying, he was assigned to the USCG Cutter Manta, an 87' marine protector class Cutter based in Surfside Beach, Texas, along the Texas Gulf Coast. The Manta has a crew of 10, a 19 foot beam and can sustain a maximum speed of 25 knots. So here it is, late August, and standing at the pier is a 14 year old, in fatigues not knowing what to expect. He fears quickly subsided as he was integrated into the crew. For this tour of duty, he was assigned to the deck crew section. For the next week and a half, Alexander performed, trained and worked side by side with other Coast Guard Seaman, learning everything that was required, in order to be a member of a USCG deck crew. He stood watches. Not by myself; but I did everything as if I was the only one standing watch said Marquardt.During his stay on the Manta, the Cutter spent three days at sea, during which the crew, including Marquardt performed standard patrols and law enforcement boarding's. During these boarding, per Coast Guard regulation, Alexander was not permitted to participate, nor be on deck. But that didn't stop Alexander from learning and interacting with the crew.So impressed by his performance, Master Chief Glen LaMont, the Officer in Charge of the Manta gave Alexander an open invitation to return. This self assured young man did just that. During Thanksgiving 2003 he again reported to the Manta, this time there was no apprehension or fear. He felt as if he was, and indeed he is a member of the Manta's extended crew. This tour of duty found Mr. Marquardt assigned to the Engineering detail. If you ask Alexander what he wants to do with his life, you'll hear a proud young man say: "Go to the Naval Academy and become a Nuclear Engineer". High hopes, but this is a disciplined determined young man. Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeff Coons, USCG left the NSCC last June, to further his service to our country in the Coast Guard wanted to say to the NSCC and his adult leaders, "Thank you for kicking me in the butt mentally, otherwise I wouldn't be where I am today". PO Coons is currently stationed at Coast Guard Station, Philadelphia, where he applies the values he learned in the Sea Cadets, to his life as a Coastie..Master Chief Glen LaMont, of the CGC Manta said this about Alexander, He's a fine professional young man. The Naval Sea Cadets have taken what was obviously exceptional raw material and then fined tuned this material into both a young man society can be proud of, and into a fine sailor. The traits he exhibits; his open mind-ness and his willingness to engage with people will go far in any organization. The Master Chief stressed an additional item about young Marquardt. This is someone other people, both young and old, should emulate. If you talk to Alexander's mother, you get the feeling he'll succeed. The pride in her voice is unmistakable. With her support, and the support of the adult leaders in the Naval Sea Cadets he'll learn the necessary tools to deal with life, and by studying hard at school, we may find Mr. Marquardt trade his Cadet title for one of Midshipmen in a few years. The Real World at Cape Cod, MassachusettsEd Stone is not your ordinary 17 year old, from the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts. How many 17 year olds have already spent six years working with the Coast Guard and the Navy? But that's what Ed has been doing. I found the program extremely interesting, said Ed when asked why he joined. The Navy League Cadet Corps and the Naval Sea Cadets Corps provided more hands' on experience and chances to learn than the Boy Scouts, he further commented. Our Adult Leaders have always put academics above the program, said Ed. If you made the honor roll at school, you got awards in the Navy League. When I graduate, I'm going to enlist in the Navy. I'm interested in boat mechanics, so I'm going to strike for Machinist Mate.James McLoughlin, is the adult leader for the Gosnold Division of the Naval Sea Cadets, located at the Mass Maritime Academy in Buzzard's Bay. McLoughlin has nothing but pride in the accomplishments of not only Stone, who as the leading Petty Officer of the Division, overseas approximately twenty other young men and women in the program, but all the other Cadets in his division. Ed is an exemplary young man, who has built up quite a bit of experience with the Coast Guard, since his joining the NSCC, said McLoughlin. He's proud of the performance of his Cadets, and their team spirit. In 2003, McLoughlin's cadets received 1st place at the annual New England swim competition, 2nd place at the annual New England Flagship Competition and scored 13th out of 285 Sea Cadet units in the nation. There are also 82 League Cadet Units nationally. Their accomplishments in this program can be tied directly to our emphasizing their need to succeed, at what ever level that means, academically. This breeds self-worth which finds it rewards in future successes, in business, in the military and in life said McLoughlin. It doesn't happen in a vacuumWe've heard that line before. We hear it as part of some TV ads, to get you the listener involved, usually with your kids. Guess what, their right! Just as the slogan Leader's aren't born, they're Made, you can't make future leaders without adult supervision. In our next article, we'll talk about some of these adult leaders, these selfless, caring adults who volunteer their time to help thousands of kids get prepared for life. The Adult Leadership Cadre of the Navy League Cadet Corps and Naval Sea Cadet Corps; another successful program! For more information about the Naval Sea Cadet Corps or Navy League Cadet Corps, go to their web site at www.seacadets.org. Compare Cruise Insurance - You Often Get What You Pay For!
When planning a travel vacation or cruise vacation, the last thing that one wants to think about is trouble or cancellation. Thus travel and cruise insurance is often left on the back burner. However, when the time comes to purchase your vacation insurance, be sure that you compare cruise insurance and travel insurance policies to ensure that you are getting what you expect. As always, it's "buyer beware"!That's not to say that all insurance policies and companies are out to deceive you or hide the terms of insurance pay-outs. In fact, most are very reputable. The problem comes when trying to economize while buying insurance. Seeing The World By Rail: International Jobs In The Railway Industry
There are few better ways to see the world than from the comfortable seat of a passenger train. From the rolling hills of Europe to the beautiful mountainsides of Asia, the slow pace of the train allows sight seeing and relaxing away from the rigors of work. For drivers, engineers, and guards, the experience of seeing new places while doing a job they love is a motivating force to get involved in the railway industry. It is important to understand the international job market for railway professionals before leaping head first into a job in a far away place. The best place to consult market information for international railways is by consulting with several governing bodies. The International Union of Railways and the International Union of Public Transport, for example, provide information on transit and cargo railways throughout Europe. One of the best places to find work in the railway industry is in Japan. The six Japan Railways companies, along with the extensive subway and monorail systems, employ hundreds of thousands of railway professionals to keep it running smoothly. Since the railway is the key manner of transit for travelers and residents alike, the railway is revered in Japan as a key part of daily life. Japanese railway positions require high technical aptitude, as the Japanese rail system features bullet trains and the cutting edge of railway technology.Another great place to work for railway professionals looking for international work is mainland Europe. Austria features a strong railway network called the OBB, which is improving daily and requires skilled engineers and maintenance staff. Denmark's DSB system is surprisingly sophisticated in order to deal with the small land area that it covers, with rail management professionals needed to maintain an efficient system. One of the biggest railway systems in the world, and one of the largest employers of rail professionals, is the state run Russian's railway, Russian Railways. The railway covers nearly 85,000 kilometers and employees more than a million engineering professionals to keep it running efficiently. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage to working in Russia is that some of the destinations are old industrial centers or out of the way places that are not entirely exotic. However, Russian companies rely on Russian Railways to transport goods and personnel to locations in outlying areas. This reliance means a consistent need for qualified professionals, which makes Russian Railways a secure move professionally.
